The Resort Development Organisation (RDO) has unveiled details of the sessions, guest speakers and social events that members will be able to enjoy at the RDO1 Conference which will take place at the Don Carlos Resort & Spa in Marbella (Spain) on 5-6 October 2010.



RDO lifts the lid on fraudulent class action schemes

RDO has warned owners to be wary of any approach inviting them to join a class action scheme against their resort developer or exchange company, as these are often a cover up to make them join an expensive Holiday Club under false pretences, something which has been illegal since 2008.



STOP PRESS: Consultation on EU timeshare directive announced

RDO welcomes the announcement of the UK Government’s formal consultation on the proposed Timeshare, Holiday Products, Resale and Exchange Contracts Regulation 2010, which aims to transpose into UK law the EU Timeshare Directive approved in February 2009.

Industry members, enforcement authorities, consumers and other interested parties are invited to submit their views before 1 October 2010. EU member states have until 23 February 2011 to introduce national legislation to comply with the Directive.



RDO agrees action against DTMCs with authorities in the Canaries

Discount Travel Membership Clubs

A new procedure to fight against the fraudulent activities of Discount Travel Membership Clubs (DTMCs) in the Canary Islands was agreed following a meeting between RDO’s Enforcement team and the local authorities.

Attending the meeting were representatives from the Consumer Affairs, Tourism and Development departments in the Canary Islands Government, as well as the Head of the EU’s Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) for the Canaries.



Arrest of bogus timeshare resale company in Spain

Following a report from RDO’s Enforcement team, Spanish police have arrested the person behind the fraudulent timeshare resale company Benedetti & Asociados, which was targeting timeshare owners on the Costa del Sol.

Using the name of a company which had in fact been dissolved in 1989, the fraudsters were approaching timeshare owners with the promise of a corporate buyer, demanding an upfront fee of 499 euros to secure a sale which then never materialised.



New Florida legislation provides relief to timeshare owners

New legislation approved in Florida will provide relief to timeshare owners’ associations (HOAs) and developers left to foot the bill for those owners who can no longer afford to make their maintenance fee or mortgage payment, by shortening the time needed to complete a foreclosure action.

While judicial processes for timeshare interest foreclosures can take as long as 18 months, the new process, referred to as a “trustee foreclosure”, will only take 90 days, allowing HOAs to replace a non-paying owner more quickly and cost effectively.



New Mexican eco-resorts for Interval International

Interval International has announced the affiliation of two properties from Tau Resort’s collection of beachfront and boutique eco-resorts: Tau nahui and Tau Santa Maria in Mexico.

According to Marcos Agostini, Interval International’s vice president for Latin America, the new resorts “will give members the opportunity to experience some of the rich cultural traditions and ecological diversity of this region.”



Scottish fractional golf resort joins The Registry Collection

The Village at Machrihanish Dunes on the southwest coast of the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland, considered a haven for golfers, has been affiliated to The Registry Collection luxury exchange programme.

The area is home to The Machrihanish Golf Club, designed by Old Tom Morris, which opened in 1876. Its first tee, regarded by many as the greatest opening hole in golf, lies just across the road from the resort, which also has its own 18-hole golf course, designed by David McLay Kidd.



Report reveals huge potential for fractional market in Australia and New Zealand

A new report into the Australia and New Zealand fractional market claims the sector there could generate anything from AUD$9 billion to AUD$70 billion in sales revenue, with potential consumer demand from up to 470000 households.

The Australia and New Zealand Fractional Market 2010 report was commissioned by The Registry Collection and compiled by Ragatz Associates, Australian market research firm, Bergent Research, and law firm Baker & McKenzie.



New holiday rental website bridges gap between timeshare owners and holidaymakers

Timeshare owners and resorts with available inventory can now rent their unused weeks to holidaymakers looking for resort-based apartment accommodation thanks to Holiday Letting Shop (HLS), a new holiday resort rental business and website.

The www.holidaylettingshop.com website features a live search, reservation and secure payment facility, and allows holidaymakers to look for accommodation by date, range, country, region or resort name.



RCI launches new website

RCI has launched a new and greatly enhanced website, www.rciventures.com, which the company describes as a ‘must read’ source for news and views on the shared vacation ownership industry in Europe, Middle East, Africa and India regions.

The new site includes interactive features such as regular podcast from the ‘Ventures Visionaries’ industry leaders and online subscriptions to weekly breaking news email updates, RSS alerts and monthly e-newsletter. Visitors are also encourage to post their comments on each story published on the website.



Perspective Magazine adds Asia Pacific edition

Perspective International celebrates an early finish to its expansion project with the announcement that a new Asia Pacific edition of Perspective Magazine will be launched at the ATHOC Convention in New Zealand in September 2010, months ahead of schedule.

This will be the fourth version of the shared ownership industry magazine, which has grown from a small European publication into a globally recognized name in a few years. Its North America edition was launched in February 2010 and a South Africa edition will be formally launched next month.

Marriott Vacation Club has launched a new, points-based Marriott Vacation Club Destinations programme in North America and the Caribbean, offering greater flexibility, further personalization and more opportunities for owners.
